Bits & Pieces

I posted about a vintage bathroom awhile back and wanted to share some pics on how it has come together.
At first, I was scared. Vintage can be tricky and it's very easy to end up with a very dated looking space if you're not careful.

I was working with a vintage wallpaper and vintage drapery panels...

We added a sheep skin rug adds a little hip to the vintage....

I also love the texture! It's not often you see a sheep skin in a bathroom!

For the vanity, we were working with those 1970's, flat panel cabinets.
It looked an awful lot like this:

My client was not up for a total bathroom makeover so we had to get creative working with what we already had. We added some vintage bamboo frame moulding to the fronts and new hardware.

The dark background makes the antique white appear to be more crisp, while adding a cool element of contrast. An update that cost much less than ripping it out....under $300...and you know what happens when you rip out an old vanity......a simple bath remodel snowballs into an entire bath overhaul and thousands of dollars end up being spent! So, when you're not looking to overhaul and spend your life savings, you work with what you've got!

As for accessories, so far we have a frame with nice clean lines that just happened to go with the vintage wallpaper....

as well as a few more vintage pieces that I will share later once it's all together. We're also working on an update to some typical folding doors that hide the laundry area. Another thing that certain set-ups and predicaments may get in the way of a simple change out. It's not always quick and easy to replace outswinging doors in tight areas, so sometimes it's better to just stick with what you have and figure out how to make it look better. Coming soon! I'm in the process of the makeover at this very moment!

Speaking of makeovers....KDI is getting a new website!

Shari at Little Blue Deer has been working very hard and dealing very patiently with a certain indecisive, design diva!

I won't name any names....but she's even driving herself crazy!!

Ok, ok!!
That design diva is me. I admit it. I need help!

I just love so many different things!

We tried this sketch-y look with some of my little illustrations:

Just for fun and whimsy, but with everything going on, it just looked a little crazy. They may find their way onto the site in some way, but just not sure yet.

Something that did make it was my silhouette. I thought it was appropriate since I am always doing silhouettes for clients and have never done one of myself! Crazy huh?

So that 's me....except I hear that my nose is slightly more pointy. Thanks Dad!

So, those are little bits and pieces of what's been going on my world.

There is so much more I want to share but can't just yet! Stay tuned!

Hope you are all having a fabulous week!

Lots of Dots!

I didn't even know I had a theme going for our new bedroom design....
Apparently it's dots!

dots here:

and here...

dots  there:

and there..

dots everywhere!

I think I have a thing for dots.

I even considered a dotty pattern for the walls. Like this:

p.s. I LOVE those zebras!

But now i am feeling more like this:

those octagon's in the center are technically "not-so-round dots"

Gotta keep my theme going!

The color palette is inspired by my favorite pieces of my wardrobe and the pieces that I wish were a part of this lovely jacket that caught my eye.....

Another important piece is this vintage makeup bag that my husband bought me many moons ago. We were at an antique mall looking around one afternoon and I said that I loved all the colors of the fabric and the next day he surprised me with it. Isn't he such a keeper?!?

I think I have always been a Green kind of girl, usually the green is outnumbered by all the pink, but maybe this time, for our room, it won't be.

I have never dared to use it on a larger scale.

Like this:

or this:

I just can't decide!

Green headboard, green walls, black headboard, black and white walls, I just don't know yet!

I will keep you posted though!

Would you dare to go green?

A Cabinet Gets A Fresh New Look!

Last Thursday was like Christmas for me!

We installed a beautiful new lining inside a client's glass cabinet and last Thursday was my day for styling! I love unwrapping shiny new goods and placing them in just the right spot. Adding fresh flowers into the mix, especially pink ones, only gets me more excited! I'm talking the kind of excitement that is similar to that of receiving a fabulous gift with the name "Spade" on it.

You know what I'm talking about.

Here's a look inside!

White ceramic serving pieces that are both functional and beautiful are mixed with all the beautiful glassware and accessories a happy hostess could ever want.

There's even a hot chocolate bar!

Ready for the kids to come inside from playing in the snow!

I only wish I had made a huge chocolate cake for this shoot. Not just for the pics but for my own little celebration afterwards!

Couldn't resist the graphics on this "Love" towel from Pottery Barn. I had to get one for myself too!

A little hint:

Mix in some linens. They need a place to stay anyway.

I don't know about you, but my own glass cabinets are getting a new backdrop asap!

If you feel up to the task of making your own cabinet lining, here are a few tips:

1. Dry fit the unpainted panels in the cabinet BEFORE you stencil them. If you make adjustments after you stencil, your pattern will be off.
2. After making any cuts to adjust the fit, then it's time to stencil.
3. Lay the panels out on the floor, side by side, and stencil as if they are all one piece.
4. Have wine handy for the installation.

If you tackle your own, please share with me!

Happy Monday!

Colorful Inspiration For A Nursery!

I just got the Kate Spade, Things We Love book for Christmas and I haven't been able to keep my eyes out of it! I seriously lug it around everywhere I go! This is an espcially big deal because I just had gallbladder surgery and it kinda hurts to carry heavy stuff......yet I still do it...that just shows how much I love it....right??

If you're a Spade fan, you should get it. It's seriously beautiful and a fun read. Plus, it will look amazing on your coffee table, or around your neck, like I seem to be carrying it.....anyway, I have been dreaming up the decor for an extra little client, a baby girl who is due to make her grand entrance in March! She will most likely be named cool is that??

Back to my point, this book, combined with inspiration for little Freya's nursery has really tipped me over the girl-y edge!

I am dying to see this floral... the backdrop for the crib!

In my dream world the crib would be like this:

or this....

but we have a pretty cool antique crib to work with instead, and I'm pretty happy about that, I'm just a junky for contrast so my mind is always conjuring up images filled with black and white!

We also have some really cool vintage pieces that we are working with. A dresser and a nightstand to be exact. They are extra special because they were once in Freya's Mommie's room.

They will probably be painted in colors like these:

and pinks and mints....

My inspiration pile...

and a fabulous chair that needs some love....

This girl's room is going to be a fun mix of bright colors, vintage treasures, and a lots of whimsy!

Now to get this girl-y party started!

Everything New!!

I know you can have a fresh start any ol time, but it feels extra fresh at the beginning of a new year.

Like it's EXTRA super fresh, like the first time you do a load of laundry with a new, fabulously scented, fabric softener. You know what I mean, right?
That's the ONLY time it's actually exciting to do laundry too.

For some reason, I am actually excited for the New Year and the clean slate it presents.
I can't wait to get some much needed business in order and get some projects going!

(that's right husband! This girl MADE A LIST!)

1. Get a brand spanking new website!

No more DIY!!
This girl doesn't have time and sometimes, actually most times, we are better off focusing on what we do best. For me, that is NOT website design.

You'll see a fresh new look from Little Blue Deer!!

She has done some amazing sites for fellow designers. I can't wait to see what she does for mine!

2. Open up a Shop!

I have been working with some really awesome local talent who can do stuff like this.....

.....that is...make handbound journals and sketchbooks out of basically anything that I want!

I love to collect pretty papers and little tidbits that come along with purchases or presents and then have something useful made out of the pieces of randomness.

Some journals even come with a little present:

A little Kate Spade pencil that fits right on the cover! Isn't that special?!?

I have other little things that need to find a cool home...

.....golden plated railroad spikes anyone? They make a really cool paper weight!

There is so much more just sitting around my office. Not very many people wander up to my office so I have to get these things out there where everyone can see them. I see an Etsy shop in my future.

3. Make More of THIS Happen!!

having a house tour on Apartment Therapy was pretty exciting and it led to even more excitement!
Like being contacted by Good Housekeeping Magazine!
Having a feature in the Show and Tell section was AMAZING! I will never forget the day that I realized MY issue had hit the stands! I spied the cover out of the corner of my eye at Target and ran over to it so fast I'll bet other shoppers thought my britches were on fire! I proceeded to buy 10 copies and somehow managed to finish my shopping without running around the store yelling "That's ME everyone!! That's MEEEEEE!"
Would you have held it in??

I'm not sure how to top the excitement that was 2013, but I'm gonna try!

I have had an office for over a year now and my sign for the front window is still laying around my office somewhere! SHAME ON ME!! I'm gonna hang it up and put humongous lights around it!
Maybe not the latter, but it's not doing any good wherever it is!

5. Make More Beautiful Spaces Happen....Faster!

I'm hiring help! This isn't a one girl gig anymore!
I'm so happy to be able to say that I have enough business now to be able to share some responsibility.
I will probably start with an intern and see how that works out. I think the most exciting part of having design help is getting to see what someone elses brain will conjur up. I'm hoping to find someone passionate and infinitely inspired.

6. Travel!!

Speaking on inspiration, nothing is more inspirational than getting out of your normal environment! I want to go explore and not just at the local flea this year!

Where should I go??

Turns out lists can be my friend. The only immediate downside is not being able to make fun of the hubs for having 900 lists. Good thing he never slacks on his duty to give me things to make fun of!

What's on your list for 2014?
